Buying the largest household items we can find such as beds, refrigerators, wardrobes and televisions always seems like a great idea until we have to move house.
Getting these bits of furniture in was hard enough to begin with but now we’re tasked with decanting and then reinstalling at a new location. It’s not an easy job which is why we have several tips which we hope will help make the job a little easier.
Disassemble
Depending on where you bought your furniture, you might have had to install it yourself in the first place. If this is the case, find that old instruction manual you should have laying around and return the item of furniture into its base components. It can be a lengthy task but at least the resulting pieces will be more readily transported.
Invest in a Sack Truck or Dolly
Large boxes and objects can be easy to handle if you know how. A sack truck will allow you to load and transport larger items than you could otherwise manage under your own steam.
If you can’t see yourself needing one long term, sack trucks and dolly’s are available for hire at most hardware stores.
Empty Your Furniture First
It might sound obvious but it is always a good idea to empty your furniture of items before attempting to relocate. Saving time is always desirable but when you consider how much longer it will take you to move an item weighing an additional 20 kg because it’s full of clothes, it just isn’t worth it.
Hire a Van
It’s tempting to try and fill your car with any piece of furniture that will fit to try and save money. When you consider the amount of return trips you’ll have to make it usually isn’t worth the time or effort.
An appropriate sized van can be hired from several places and whilst not cheap, having the right tool for the job will make your life much easier. Costs can vary wildly so only go as big as you need and shop around for the best price.
Hire the Professionals
Better yet, it is often worth hiring a specialist removals company to help you with your relocation. The benefits are numerous;
- A removals company will provide their own lifting equipment and come with the expertise required to use it effectively. They also know how much can safely be carried at any one time so breakages and injury is much less likely than going it alone.
- A removals specialist will have access to specialist machinery. It is often difficult to get larger pieces of furniture through a front door so enquire whether your chosen company has access to machinery that is capable of lifting a queen-sized bed through an upstairs window. This service will cost more but sometimes it is the only way to facilitate a move.
No matter where you are in the country there will be someone to assist. Arrowpak operate within East Anglia so if you’re local consider getting in touch. Make sure that you obtain a few quotes from several companies as costs can vary substantially.
Moving house needn’t be stressful so make sure that your needs are taken care of by a company that has your best interests at heart.
