There are no interior accessories that are as diverse as a mirror. It can add light to a dark space, create space in a small room or act as a focal point within practically any setting. A mirror can be the perfect accessory to complete the look of a room, however to achieve the right result it is important to ensure that the mirror is placed correctly. Below are eight top tips to help you achieve the perfect mirror placement.
- Firstly, decide which sort of mirror best suits the room and the effect you want it to have. Some mirrors are designed to be free-standing and can be placed anywhere in the room, some are ‘leaners’ and need to lean against a wall or other items of furniture and some mirrors are designed to be hung on a wall. Your choice of mirror will depend upon the amount of space you have available and the effect you are looking to achieve- whether it be extending a room, adding light to a darker space or creating a focal point.
- Consider items that the mirror will be reflecting. One of the biggest mistakes you can make when choosing where to hang a mirror, is placing it in a location where it will reflect random things in the room that may not be worth looking at. For example, you wouldn’t want your mirror to reflect a pile of clutter or an unattractive, tatty piece of furniture.
- If you have chosen a leaner mirror, where the mirror rests against a wall as opposed to being hung on it, then you could also add some extra accessories to make it a focal point. Place large, leaner mirrors in dark corners and dressing rooms and try adding a spotlight behind it for dramatic effect.
- Choosing a bold mirror as a focal point? Don’t go overboard with smaller mirrors in the same room. One attention grabbing piece can work better than multiple smaller mirrors.
- Placing a mirror in the bedroom? Try putting it in a place where it won’t reflect the bed. Seeing your reflection as soon as you wake up is usually not a good look.
- Incorporating mirrors into the kitchen can be difficult as it can make the room look more cluttered than is necessary. Instead try a mirrored splash-back if you are set on having a mirror in the kitchen.
- When using mirrors in narrow places such as hallways and stairways, go for smaller horizontal mirrors which help to widen the space and improve the flow from room to room. A mirror in these locations will also add extra lighting to darker spaces and provide a feeling of continuity.
- Placing a mirror near the entrance of your home can have multiple benefits. Not only does it create a more welcoming environment for visitors, it will also add light to these often dark areas. In addition, it will give you a place to check your appearance just before you leave the house!
