In the UK, two types of cockroaches prevail. These two species are German cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches. The German cockroach is small in size and measures about 1.5 centimetres long. The insect is tan to brown and, in some cases, almost black. The pest features two dark streaks running adjacent to one another from the wings to the head. Although the bug features wings, it cannot maintain flight. These types of cockroaches can easily find habitats in buildings as their small size makes it possible for them to stay out of human sight.
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches look different from their German counterparts as they display a glossy brown to black body. They also are rather large, measuring about 2.5 centimetres long. The insects, which are referred to as water bugs, often can be found in damp locations. Therefore, these types of cockroaches are often seen in such places as sewers, porches, drains, or basements. Whilst the German cockroach is more adept at climbing, the Oriental cockroach moves mostly across the ground.
Some General Facts about Cockroaches
Indeed, technicians at companies such as Armour Pest Control must deal with a formidable pest as the cockroach has been around for several millennia. In fact, cockroach remains go back to the time of the dinosaurs. Plus, this type of pest can sustain itself for as long as a month without eating. In addition, the insect is known to go for a fortnight without water. Not only that but cockroaches are known to live for a week without benefit of their heads.
Another Reason for Allergies or Respiratory Distress
Because of their adaptability, cockroach species on the Earth number about 4,000 worldwide. Most of the pests inhabit commercial and residential structures as they like to be close to food and water in a warm environment. Unfortunately for humans, the insects are known to trigger allergies and respiratory ailments and spread various kinds of unhealthy bacteria.
Using Gel Baits
When pest control technicians tackle a cockroach problem, they use various gel baits as well as advanced insecticides. Gel baits are made ready to use for cockroach treatments as they can be applied with an applicator gun. One tube of the substance is sufficient enough to make over 1,000 placements. This type of insecticide offers immediate results and remains active for as long as 12 weeks at a time. Cockroaches who feed on this type of product are dead within only a few hours.
Reducing a Cockroach Population
Typically, this type of insecticide is transferred from one cockroach to another as the roaches readily consume the faeces of cockroaches that have eaten the gel as well as other dead cockroaches in harbourages. Because feeding is central to reproduction, movement, and survival, insecticide baits offer a viable solution to realise population control amongst cockroach species.
Cockroaches regularly look for dark places with most of the insects spending most of their lives in harbourages in crevices, cracks, or voids. They only leave these spots to forage for water or food. Therefore, chemicals that are used for cockroach consumption must be transmitted through cockroach harbourages.
